A Digital Dilemma
This is one of the test comics I was working on before starting the prequel. The character designs are still a bit in flux, but they’re looking more like I want them to look.
Avatar: The Way of Water came out at the end of 2022, but I spent so long tinkering with this that the movie they are initially talking about is now basically forgotten.
And yet, I keep going back to this conversation. My spouse is Team Aya, I’m Team Rose. How about you?
Transcript:1
[Rose is reclining on a couch in a coffee shop, talking to Aya]
Rose: …but the only difference is that his kids have four fingers, while the other Na’Vi only have three. I’m not, like, an Avatar geneticist. But I’d expect a human-Na’Vi hybrid to be, I don’t know, SHORTER? Less BLUE?
Aya (looking at her hand): Ok, sure, but… Why four fingers?
Rose: Uh, because that’s the standard number of fingers for a person to have?
[Aya holds up a hand with all fingers extended but her pinky]
Aya: FOUR fingers?
[Rose holds up her whole hand]
Rose (laughing nervously): No! Four fingers and a thumb.
Aya (unimpressed): A thumb IS a finger.
Rose: I guess? But you wouldn’t say that, like, MICKEY MOUSE has four fingers. He’s got three fingers. The thumb is just assumed.
Aya: Why would we assume that? Some people don’t have THUMBS!
Thumbs ain't fingers, otherwise we wouldn't call them thumbs, we'd call them fingers. Lol
This sort of conversation is all to familiar 😂
